For the month of September, around fifty interventions imagined by twenty-six collectives from Lausanne occupied the Maison Gaudard (formerly mudac) to highlight the important network of independent venues (past and present) in Lausanne. While the stories of these ephemeral episodes are quickly fading to make way for new initiatives and generations, a large number of artists occupying center stage today, at one time or another, have either participated within a collective in the organization of exhibitions, or have seen their work exhibited first in one of these places. We will be joined by Sophie Ballmer and Guillaume Pinet of Tunnel Tunnel, who were key initiators of this project.
hely[i], Hungary
https://helyindex.hu/
hely[i] is a simple directory of non-profit, independent* art galleries, artist-run and off-spaces in Hungary. It aims to support these places and serve as a guide for those who would like to discover contemporary art through the eyes of young, emerging artists without a need to compromise with large institutions often tied to the government or directly influenced by market interests and the pressure of profitability. We will be joined by Bettina Bence and Barnabás Bácsi who founded the list drawing inspiration from Independent Space Index.
PROJECT SPACE FESTIVAL BERLIN
https://2022.projectspacefestival-berlin.com/
In August, the Project Space Festival 22 presented 31 project spaces and initiatives in Berlin. Each participating space was given 24 hours to realize an event, so that the program is as diverse in its respective focuses as the participating project spaces and initiatives themselves. Project spaces and initiatives from Berlin and beyond were selected from an open call by a jury consisting of individuals with cultural-political commitment to artists, independent curators and self-organized spaces in Berlin and familiarity with collective practice and free collaborative art projects. We will be joined by Lisa Schorm & Heiko Pfreundt of Kreuzberg Pavillon, the artistic directors of the 2022 Festival.
INDEPENDENT SPACE INDEX, Vienna
Independent Space Index is a comprehensive directory of artist-run, non-commercial and independent art spaces in Vienna, as well as a channel for representation and networking between the listed spaces. Currently (as of November 2022), 81 spaces are listed. Founded in 2017, Independent Space Index aims to strengthen solidarity among like-minded cultural initiatives, increase the visibility of non-commercial independent artistic production by archiving their locations, facilitating their discovery, and highlighting their contribution to the Viennese art scene. As a self-managed network, the Independent Space Index ensures exchange within and between the listed spaces and with similar initiatives in other countries.
The event is open to the public.
